Buying an Icecream. · This lesson involves a group of 4+ pupils acting out the task of buying an ice cream. · One pupil acts as the salesperson and the other 3 act as the customers. · Pupils should be encouraged to not ask for the same number of scoops as their friends. · The other pupils in the class record what flavour was purchased; the number of ‘scoops; and the price. · The prices can be changed according to the Mathematical ability of the pupils in the group. (See pupil sheets) · All pupils are given the opportunity to take part in ‘acting out the senario’ · The teacher can act as the vendor initially until the pupils become more confident. · Ideally (and usually) French is spoken throughout by the pupils. Mathematical Links. (Amount of French spoken or recorded would vary according the activity in question.) · Simple graphs showing the number of ice-creams of each flavour sold. · Pie charts showing the number of ice creams of each flavour sold. (The number of flavours sold needs to be a factor of 360.) · Calculate the amount of money the ice –cream vendor ‘took on the day’. · Calculate the amount of profit made on the day. Vary the profit depending on the size of ice cream. · Interpretation of a line graph showing the number of the number of ice - creams sold over a period of time. Montgomery Comenius Project 2008/10 Café Josef Scene: Restaurant – (Café Josef) · 1 waiter (+ possibly an assistant to help work out the bill). · Number of customers can vary each time. · Each customer must buy 1 drink, 1 starter, 3 items from the main course, and 1 from the sweet menus. · Each customer has a copy of the ‘bill’ so they can work out what their own meal costs. · The customers will also need to work out what they think the total bill will come to. · The waiter / cashier will also have to work out the total bill. · All pupils watching will have a copy of the bill so they can work out the total cost for each group of ‘customers’ · The customers pay the total bill in 10 Euro notes eg If the bill comes to E57.40 then the customers hand over E60. · All class have to work out the change · Or each customer pays separately with units of E10. · Pupils in groups of 4? Each pupil is given the opportunity to be part of the customer group each time. Other 3 check his figures (with a calculator)
